In Humanities class we learned the proper usage for the word "ironic" and exactly what irony is and different types. Verbal irony is when a speaker says one thing but means another, often referred to as "sarcasm". Dramatic irony is used in a narrative when an event occurs whose significance the audience understands but the characters do not. Situational irony is when something happens and a reversal of expectations occur. Cosmic irony is when divine forces, such as God or fate, conspire against beings to destroy them. This often happens when the outcome of the story seems to be too cruel of a joke for the ending.
